      <image:caption>I wanted to start with ‘Very Peri’, named after the Pantone Colour of the Year which was supported by the SS22 runway as demonstrated on my moodboard. It isn’t a colour I recall seeing much of on the high-street at all so it will be a refreshing change. I quite like the idea of seeing this in crunchy cotton poplins and/or affordable sportswear as I do find colour options in sportswear is very limited to either super brights, or pastels.</image:caption>

In addition, the new book by Ellen MacArthur on ‘Circular Design for Fashion’ is in a very similar shade!       <image:title>Blog - Westminster Working Cultures. - What do you regret not doing at University? Networking for sure, or some form of it. My course leader Andrew Groves, always stressed the importance of this but at the time, I always associated ‘networking’ with having fake relationships with people and only for the reason to benefit one another. This was not appealing to me in the slightest nor did it match my personality. However, as I have now later learned, that ‘networking’ can be interpreted in a way that suits the individual. My version of it would have simply been to have made more effort keeping in touch with people, especially my classmates as after graduating, you go through so many changes, have so many questions, and the best people to share this with would have been with them.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Along the same lines, I also regret not joining other communities or even the Student Union, both things I feel could have made me much more confident and prepared, prior to entering the working world especially if there were similar opportunities like Westminster Working Cultures. And although this isn’t an obvious ‘regret’, just some final words I guess, but while you’re at University, be as creative as possible, as it’s your only opportunity to before profit (mainly) becomes the sole focus when working for other businesses and trying new ideas can be deemed as high risk.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Definitely find your ‘people’ and when you do, hold onto them tight! During an ‘away-day’ at one of the places I worked at, everyone in the team took a Myers Briggs test and I was an INFJ, a type of introvert. Funnily enough, out of around 15 of us, only 2 of us were introverts! Having this highlighted definitely made me a lot more aware of why some things may not have gone the way I had hoped and why some opportunities felt unattainable…but being an introvert isn’t a disadvantage in the grand scheme of things. Nevertheless, as I became more senior within my roles, there were several occasions where I had to tune into being more like an extrovert and later discovered that there is actually an in-between ‘type’ called an Ambivert! There are some really good TED Talks on this subject which answers this question well.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>During the visit, I collated hundreds of fabric cards (literally, two suitcases full) to reference for my designs, these swatches also helped me pull together the colour palette. Prior to the trip however, I had already done my forecasting for the season which covers key shapes, colours, prints, themes etc. so I did have some focus which is extremely important when you have deadlines as the textiles market is basically like having 7 vertical football pitches filled with fabrics and trims… and that is only the main part of it. Forecasting can be done several ways. It is entirely dependant on you as a designer or who is doing it for you and what they are experienced in. Some people just solely like to look at catwalk as it suits their market, or like myself, prefer to look at as many things as possible which includes Film, culture, social-economics, exhibitions etc.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Whilst researching, I saved thousands of relevant images. Vintage, film screen stills, fashion editorials, something ripped from a magazine. It always comes together in the end and I’ve definitely made hundreds of moodboards in the last 14 years. I had also analysed the catwalk shows as thoroughly as possible, to pull out some key ideas. There was a definite interest in lilac and olive/khaki greens and I liked the idea of having them together in a collection, a whimsical pastel, which seemed to be the new ‘millennial pink’ and a moody colour to contrast. These formed the crux of the colour palette.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Here are the key images that formed the foundation of my moodboard. The catwalk image of the trench coat was more of a marker that I definitely needed a trench coat in the collection. Key details that I felt strongly for were soft, bubble sleeves which were dominant on the catwalks but it also prompted me to explore vintage photos which is basically where most things derive from. At the same time, I came across rouleau loops and covered buttons which I adored as an additional detail and reflected in some details I found while comp shopping. Another image I came across is the shell and pearl which cemented my ‘key trim’ idea. As you can see, just from very few images, I have already created a very whimsical, feminine but timeless feel which is also my own ‘handwriting’ when it comes to fashion design.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I wanted to break down a little more on the key components of building a moodboard which includes any key muses. I wouldn’t normally have a separate board for them as they should just be on the main board, but having them isolated can help you figure out what all the other imagery should look like if you’re struggling. In this instance, I had Hayett B McCarthy and Jennae Quisenberry in mind, but the main source of inspiration actually came from a photoshoot by Peter Lindbergh in 1986 of models wearing trench coats on a beach.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>So, coupled with all the above information, this is what my final board looked like! I had it all in loose tears during my trip to China and put it altogether when I was back in the UK as it was important for me to relay the trend back to my team so that everyone was on board and all relevant departments were aware of what the theme was so they could start preparing collateral and content i.e. marketing, photoshoots, social media, getting in touch with suitable influencers etc. Just to stress, I didn’t simply start laying out all my research and it was done. I laid everything out, took some away, reshuffled the layout, put some things back in, took more things out, reshuffle again… until it ‘made sense’ to me. This can sometimes take a couple of hours, a couple of days or weeks as not only am I looking for the correct imagery but it also needs to be in the right colour too. The collection I was building was going to cover 20-40 different items of clothing, across 2-3 months so it was really important that I had enough inspiration on there to cover these ‘options’. Knowing the timing of the collection is also really important as I have already mentioned at the start of this blog post. As the first drop is required for January, I had to be aware of the weather and ‘end-use’. It’s going to be cold and nobody is going to be looking to buy slip dresses so I had to also plan this out very thoroughly, with the last and smallest drop trickling in at the beginning of March, which is when another, new trend would also launch. Number of trends, options and launching times vary a lot across brands. Very established (20+yrs) brands will strictly go by their own history of sales e.g. if nothing apart from black items sell in January, a dominant part of the collection should have black options. Smaller brands are more flexible and happy to adapt to ensure there are more exciting items to buy since they will most likely offer less items to buy and have less stock overall.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Once I have completed the moodboard, the colour palette is quite easy to put together but it doesn’t always work that way. Sometimes you may find yourself building the palette before anything else as maybe a group of colours was actually your key inspiration. As you can see, I have added my green and lilac shades as mentioned earlier on, also a hint of print (polka dot), some denim, lace for texture and a new colour (rosewood and cinnamon) derived from some imagery on the moodboard. I wasn’t sure if these would go but I wanted to try nevertheless.</image:caption>

These came in the form of really rough doodles and adding tiny bits from my colour palette next to them to have a better sense of the colour balance. The image here is actually just the neater version and part of my range planning to help demonstrate that each piece was ‘strong’ on its own and wasn’t going to fight for attention with another style. However, looking at it in black and white, does bring up the question if two tea dresses are required. However, one is in a floral print and to launch in February, while the other is in a solid colour and launching a month later.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>These have been bubbling for a really long time now but predominantly in the form of the ‘Leg of Mutton’ sleeve, or also known as the Gigot sleeve which is where the sleeve is full at the shoulder and tapers from the elbow to the wrist. I’ve often seen high-end/luxury brands do this (gigot) sleeve but I never really saw it translate to high-street/commercial brands as I imagine it is a tricky silhouette to pull off well, and can also be home to a vast amount of fit issues and cost factors such as having to add zips or buttons/snaps at the wrist. To avoid the fit issue, it could be put into a stretch fabric, however, the ‘puff’ part at the shoulder is more or likely going to collapse or you would need to add fusing for the structure… so as you can see, it gets really difficult when you are trying to produce within a tight price point… which is where this more simplified puff sleeve makes its grand entrance. The ‘Cottagecore’ trend has significantly catapulted this detail into the mass market and I particularly love it in the metallic by Molly Goddard and beautifully executed through pleats by Gabriela Hearst.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I absolutely love a cutout. It may be from my nearly-5 years designing going-out-dresses at one point in my career and cutouts were the most cost-effective way to update them! So when I am looking through runway and trying to spot the common denominator, I naturally gravitate towards cutouts, splices, keyholes etc… and this time there is definitely a big focus on back details. I always laugh when I think about back cutouts as the idea of it was always met with a ‘but she can’t wear a bra’! However, I am happy to note that things have changed a lot since then and if people like something, they will find a way to wear a bra/not wear a bra! The back details by Victoria Beckham and Maggie Marilyn where skinny straps are a key feature are my favourite.</image:caption>

Like the puff sleeves, these collars have been popularised through the ‘Cottagecore’ trend and also Street Style. They have already made their way through the craft world where people are making them as individual, detachable pieces in silk and upcycled fabrics. There is something so whimsical and nostalgic about them which is why I think they are so popular and I don’t think they will be going anywhere soon. If anything, they may just keep getting bigger and bigger, and I mean that in a literal sense where they flop over your shoulders.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Now that the SS20 shows have come to an end, I begin to assess key themes through all the collections, and colour is always one of my favourite things to look at. I firstly wanted to highlight this beautiful shade of ‘violet’ which is commonly seen in Autumn/Winter collections instead of Spring/Summer. I especially loved it in all its diaphanous glory at Victoria Beckham and can see this being worn at Summer weddings or on holidays, rather than the usual night-time-party-dress. It also works really well as a base colour for prints both small and large scale and delicious in shiny finishes!!</image:caption>

They were very much emulating the Zara aesthetic but at least I knew that anything I bought from there would have less chance of being spotted on someone else! Their website is non-transactional (at the time of writing this article) and feels more like a landing page but their Instagram account is inspiring and not the usual aesthetic of most 'commercial' fashion brands.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I have over 17 years experience as a Womenswear Fashion Designer working across multi-product. The bulk of my experience has been working with London-based Fashion brands but I decided to become a freelancer in 2019 where I focus on helping established and start-up brands navigate the complicated world of fashion design through the use of moodboards, trend-forecasting and tech pack development ready to hand directly to manufacturers.
